For example, Hyundai Motor UK reported total sales of 91,800 vehicles, with Tucson accounting for 35% of their total sales just in 2024, meaning around 32,130 cars were sold in just that year.

This impressive figure then positioned Tucson as the seventh best-selling car in the UK for that year, with Tucson being a big part of that for them.

So, whether you are after a family car, something that has great fuel consumption, or you just want that higher driving position, the Tucson really does tick a lot of boxes.

As a result, in this car review and buyers guide, we will walk you through everything you need to know before buying one – from its key features and trim levels to its running costs and what it's like to drive - we have you covered in depth.

So, let us help you decide if the Hyundai Tucson really is the right car for you, or not.

So What is the Hyundai Tucson?

Well, first, let's discover what a Hyundai Tucson actually is. So this is a family SUV, that first hit the roads in 2004, and it quickly became one of Hyundai’s best-selling models after that.

This is in part thanks to its being designed as a compact SUV, which gave drivers a practical and good value option with a higher driving position and good interior space all in one.

The first generation, in 2004, we have to admit, was quite basic compared to today’s standards, but it offered solid value for money at the time.

In 2009, the second generation arrived with a much more stylish design and better fuel efficiency, going from 35 MPG to 55 MPG here - which, in turn, showed Hyundai was stepping up its game.

This version - was also known as the ix35 in some countries - including the UK, for a few years.

By 2015, the Tucson name returned globally with the third generation.

This generation also looked sharper, had more tech, and felt more upmarket than its prior models did as well - and it also really helped Tucson grow its popularity not just in the UK but across Europe at the same time.

The latest fourth generation was then launched in 2020 and took things to a whole new level in our view here.

It came out of the gate with a refreshed new look that is bold, packed with tech, and comes in both hybrid and PHEV version options, too – perfect for today’s modern road and for people who don't want a fully electric car but want to move more towards EVs.

Consequently, as you can see over the years, the Tucson has gone from being solely a budget-friendly SUV to a stylish, smart, and reliable all-rounder and is now really seen as a better rival to big names like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage, to name just two, as a direct result here.

Exploring the Hyundai Tucson’s Exterior

So, what is the Hyundai Tucson like? Well, from our view from the front, it has a sharp, eye-catching, and striking look for its exterior, which gives you a great modern design with a lot of very clever details built in.

For example, it is not just a vehicle that looks good in photos – it genuinely, in our opinion, stands out really well on the road.

But, to work out why, let us take a closer look at the various parts of Tucson’s exterior, from what is a very bold front to its stylish rear and everything in between.

front view of hyundai tucson

Front

The front of the Tucson, for example, really makes a strong first impression.

Here, its large grille is noticeable in a good way, without being over the top, and it gives the car a very confident and assertive look.

This is then complimented well by its LED daytime running lights, which are cleverly integrated into its body and form a part of the grille design itself.

As a result, we feel that it does give you a more futuristic and modern look, all without losing that friendly, approachable vibe you want from your next SUV.

Side Profile

From the side, Tucson’s design continues to impress us here.

For example, there are clean, strong lines running along the doors that give it a very dynamic and slightly sporty feel.

This is then considered due to its stylish window shapes, and there is also a nice upward curve towards the back that adds to the overall flow of the car as well.

All in all, here you are getting a design that feels balanced, like it’s always in motion — even when parked.

Roofline

The roofline on the Tucson then adds to its touch of overall style here as well, all without compromising its practicality as it does so.

For example, this slopes just enough to give this family SUV a stylish silhouette but not so much that it eats into rear headroom.

Then, on some trims, you even get roof rails, too, which are great for mounting extra luggage or bikes for those weekend getaways, giving you a functional SUV that still looks premium at the same time.

Rear

Moving around the back, the Tucson has a tidy and polished look.

Here, its rear lights are linked by a horizontal light bar that runs across the boot, which looks very upmarket, especially at night.

Furthermore, there is also a hidden rear wiper tucked under the spoiler – a small detail, but it keeps the design neat when it is not needed.

Overall, it is clear that Hyundai has really put real thought into the rear design, which is more than evident.

Paint Options

For your paint options, here you have a good range of paint colours to choose from with Tucson.

From classic shades like black, white, and silver to bolder options like deep blue or metallic red, there really is something for everyone.

With some of the Hyundai Tucson models, for instance, when you get to the Premium and Tucson N Line trims, it even lets you mix in contrasting roof colours, which really is a good way to have that personal touch when picking a car that suits your style.

Consequently, here, you can personalise your own distinctive look with a wide range of dynamic colours and a two-tone roof available in Abyss Black as well as the Premium and the N-Line.

For example, here you can have:

  • Abyss Black Pearl
  • Atlas White Solid
  • Crypress Green Pearl
  • Ecotronic Grey Pearl
  • Engine Red Solid
  • Jupiter Orange Metallic
  • Sailing Blue Pearl
  • Serenity White Pearl
  • Shimmering Silver Metallic
  • Ultimate Red Metallic

A Closer Look Inside the Hyundai Tucson

Then, when you step inside the Hyundai Tucson, you are greeted by a cabin that feels both welcoming and high-tech at the same time.

For example here it is clear that Hyundai has put a lot of thought into making the interior practical for everyday use while still feeling a bit special.

For example, here you have:

front seats of hyundai tucson

Front Seats

We really liked the front seats, for example, in Tucson; these are properly comfy, whether you are nipping to the shops or heading off on a long drive.

They are also very supportive without feeling stiff, and there is plenty of adjustment here to help you find the perfect position.

Higher trims, such as the Premium, even offer heated and ventilated seats, which make a big difference in winter and summer alike.

Rear Seats

Passengers in the back are also not forgotten either.

The rear seats, for instance, are surprisingly spacious, with loads of legroom and enough headroom for tall adults as well.

The seat backs can even recline a bit on some models, which makes longer journeys that much more pleasant, and there are also conveniently placed air vents, so everyone stays comfortable whatever the weather’s doing outside.

Cabin Space

The cabin layout in the Tucson feels really well thought out as well and this gives you 108.2 cubic feet of space.

Everything is also within easy reach, and the materials feel soft and nice to touch.

So much so that there is a nice balance between open space and clever storage areas, so the cabin never feels cluttered.

It is also very airy and practical and feels like it has been designed with real people in mind — not just a design team in a lab, for example.

Infotainment System and Digital Cluster

The touchscreen infotainment system is also really easy and good to use.

For example, it is clear, quick to respond to, and packed with features like sat nav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Next to it, there is also a digital driver’s cluster that shows your speed, fuel info, and more in a crisp, modern layout, all of which feels a bit futuristic but without being overwhelming in the process.

New armrest and centre console design

The new armrest and centre console design in the latest generation has also been redesigned to give you a better comfort level than in previous generations, as the new armrest gives you ideal distance and access to the wireless charging pad and cup holders in the revamped centre console - which is especially true in the automatic gearbox models as well.

Boot Space

Then, when you pop the boot open, you will find plenty of space for your everyday bits or even bigger family trips.

For example, there really is enough room for your shopping bags, suitcases, or even a folded pushchair if need be.

The rear seats also fold flat, too, which gives you loads more space here.

For example, here, you can easily enjoy up to 620 litres of boot space for your luggage with the seats up and up to 1,799 litres with the rear seats folded down as well - as they fold in a 40:20:40 ratio, giving you more flexibility when needed.

Upholstery

The new Tucson is also available with Obsidian Black and Moss Grey interior colour schemes.

That said, you can also get a Cypress Green Colour Pack, which is also available, featuring a Cypress Green dashboard and door garnish accents, as well as seat stitching.

Here, for example, you can choose from seats finished in cloth, perforated leather upholstery or combination cloth & leather seats.

Which can consist of, for example:

  • Cloth & Leather Black
  • Cloth Black
  • Colour Pack Leather Moss Grey
  • Cypress Green
  • Cypress Green Colour Pack
  • Leather Black
  • Moss Grey
  • Obsidian Black (Available as standard across all trims)

N-Line Interior Colour Options

For those that decide to go for the N-Line interior, though, you can easily upgrade your comfort even more here.

This is because the sporty N Line seats help to keep you in control and comfortable with excellent lumbar support at the same time.

As a result, they are finished in a luxurious mix of perforated black textile suede and leather with red contrast stitching, which not only adds to its overall looks but is really a lot more comfortable as well.

Performance and Engine Options

Moving to look under the bonnet, the Tucson comes with a range of engines and fuel types to suit people's different needs.

For instance, here you can go for the entry-level engine petrol model, or if you are after better fuel efficiency, there are hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions available as well.

On the road, these then give you a smooth and easy-to-handle experience, even in town traffic.

It is also not just its smooth handling; here, its fuel economy is quite good across the board, especially with the hybrid models, making it a cost-effective choice for everyday use as a result.

For example, here you have to choose from:

Here, you get a 1.6-litre T-GDI turbo petrol engine with 160 PS, or you can choose from the 160 PS. 6-speed Manual Transmission in 2WD.

If, instead, you go for the mild hybrid engine, here you get the 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine with 160 PS and a 48-volt mild-hybrid tech, which is optional, but it also features a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission and a choice of 2WD or 4WD options as well.

Next up, you can instead opt for the 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine, which comes with a 47.7 kW electric motor for a total combined output of 215 PS. Furthermore, due to its hybrid classification as well, this will also mean that it will tend to qualify for lower road tax than standard ICE vehicles do, saving you on your running costs as a result.

This is then powered by a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery and paired well with a 6-speed Automatic gearbox - which is also available in both 2WD and 4WD versions.

If, instead, you are looking for a full-on electric power engine model, you can opt entirely for the Plug-in hybrid engine.

This, for example, comes with a 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine and 72 kW electric motor - which gives you - a total combined output of 252 PS.

This is also powered by a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery and paired with a 6-speed Automatic gearbox, which is available in both 2WD and 4WD options.

For your engine options, here you also have an electric car when you want it, as well as a petrol engine when you need it.

This is because the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid offers you the best of both worlds, with 40 miles of driving range when in full-electric mode, and once the electric-only range is depleted, you can plug it in a wall box at home or a fast charge charging station to get you a longer electric-only range – or instead just continue on with the petrol engine only.

Depending on your driving situation, it will also switch seamlessly between its petrol engine and electric motor and sometimes use both.

All while its regenerative braking system charges the battery for you by using the electric motor to slow the car, then converting some of that braking power back into energy stored in the battery for you to then pull from to extend your pure electric range.

You can also easily control the level of regenerative braking you get back from the car using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters as well.

Charging Options

For your charging options, here you can charge the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid at a public AC charging station, a home wall box or a domestic wall socket - giving you lots of options to choose from as a result.

Home Charging

When you are also plugged in at home, you can also remotely schedule the car's charging via your smartphone and the Bluelink app - so you can charge the car only during low-demand hours when you get lower rates, giving you a cheaper recharge rate as a direct result.

Charging Cables

Two charging cables are also fitted as standard to all Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid trims - one for public AC charging points and an ICCB / Type 2 cable for charging via a regular household power socket as well.

Tech-wise, the latest Tucson does not disappoint on this front either.

For example, just to start with, here you get a large touchscreen on the centre stack that sits neatly in the dashboard, with built-in sat nav and an easy-to-use interface.

It also supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can stay connected on the go, and with its voice control functionality - which also works well for most commands - and its high-end customisable sound system — especially in the higher trims— is very clear and punchy as well.

For your device connectivity and charging options, here you also have plenty of USB ports throughout the cabin, and Bluetooth - which comes as standard, too - which allows you to easily connect your device to stream your music really easily as well.

Another clever tech feature here is the Smart Phone Unlock ability, which now means that you can leave your car key at home.

Instead, you can now just use the Hyundai Digital Key 2, which lets you lock, unlock, and start your Tucson all via your smartphone or Apple Watch.

This really is an integral part of our Bluelink Connected Car Services, and you can also easily share Hyundai Digital Key 2 with additional smartphones – so your family can also easily lock, unlock and start your Tucson after saving it in their phone’s secure wallet as well.

For your connectivity options, the Tucson also comes equipped with Bluelink Connected Car Services – which gives you almost seamless connectivity options via your phone app or touchscreen display – with online voice recognition and a wide range of features to help make your drive easier, convenient and enjoyable.

For instance, this also comes with a free 10-year subscription to Bluelink LITE and a 1-year free trial of Bluelink PRO, which is included in the navigation system.

This then allows you to take advantage of real-time data, like traffic, parking and local petrol station info – as well as Connected Routing, Hyundai's online navigation system, all from this one system.

Safety and Driver Assistance

When looking at the ADAS systems that Tucson comes with, here Hyundai has loaded the Tucson with loads of safety features under their SmartSense umbrella.

For example, this includes things like Lane Follow Assist, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision avoidance, to name just a couple.

The car has also done very well in crash tests, too, picking up high marks from multiple safety bodies - for example, it has achieved the maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, as well as receiving the awarded Top Safety Pick+ designation by the IIHS.

As a result, for families, this is especially a reassuring choice, even more so when you combine it with its child locks on the doors, ISOFIX mounts, and rear seat reminders, all of which will help further to keep everyone safe - including your little ones.

The FCA system then will also help you by automatically braking when it detects sudden braking by the car ahead or detects pedestrians or cyclists in your path - helping you to stop the car quicker than you would have otherwise. During cross-junction turning, it also breaks if there is a risk of collision with an oncoming vehicle as well.

tucson on the highway

Blind Spot Collision-avoidance Assist (BCA)

You can also get its Blind Spot Collision-avoidance Assist system, which uses two radar sensors in the lower rear bumper to detect objects that you may not be able to see.

For example, the system will warn you of traffic in the blind spot area, and should you set the indicator in such a situation that a collision then may occur, it will sound an audible alert to let you know to stop to prevent a collision from, otherwise occurring.

Motorway / Highway Driving Assist 1.5 (HDA 1.5)

The Tucson is also available with Motorway Driving Assist 1.5, which helps you to maintain a set speed and distance from the vehicle ahead of you when driving on motorways, all while helping you to keep the car centred in its lane, even through a bend in the road.

All the while, the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) system will maintain a distance from the vehicle ahead of you, automatically speeding up and slowing down when needed for you.

N Line

If you then want more than the base model, you can opt for the more motorsport-inspired N Line trims, which add a more performance statement to the car's look.

For instance, here, the N-Line and N-Line S trims give you a range of new exterior design improvements that help to put a sleeker edge on their sporty look.

For instance, here you get some bold new 19” alloy wheels which feature the N logo and winglet form, which, in our view, really do help to make a bold road statement and improve the dynamic energy the N Line and N Line S give off.

Exclusive front design

These models also come with a more aggressive bumper design with a distinctive N-style mesh, which really helps even further to improve its overall look by giving it a bolder air intake design - inspired by the aerodynamic tips of aircraft wings.

To complement this further, you also get side mouldings and wheel arches in the same body colour that flow into the new front bumper, which then helps to add more dynamic lines and a slimmer overall look by doing so.

Muscular rear bumper

Then, here, the new rear bumper starts to feature the same aeronautic-inspired winglet shapes as in the front to bring it all together.

This then improves your sporty appearance in the rear, together with the aerodynamic N Line spoiler and the twin chrome exhaust pipes, which all really help to give you one very finished and polished overall look as a direct result.

N-Line Interior Featureas and Seats

Moving to the Interior of the N-Line models, here you can then get into a whole new level of sportiness with an interior that features more sporty-looking metal pedals and an N-Line steering wheel, as well as red accents throughout, letting you and your passengers know you have the higher-end models.

The sporty N Line seats, which are also available in both N Line and N Line S trims, also feature red contrast stitching and keep you in control, along with giving you a very comfortable ride, thanks to its additional and excellent lumbar support.

This is all then finished in a luxurious mix of perforated black textile suede and leather with red contrast stitching as well.

Hyundai Tucson Range, Trim Levels and Features

For your varying models, here the Tucson comes in 5 main trims, starting from the base model (Tucson SE Connect), which still includes lots of kits.

Then, as you move up to trims like the Tucson Premium, Ultimate, N-Line and N-line, you start to get extras like leather seats, panoramic sunroof, and premium audio.

With each trim level offering you something a bit different depending on what you priorities are from this car - whether it’s comfort, off-road looks, or high-end features.

Tucson vs Competing SUVs

In a crowded SUV market, Tucson's latest generation really stacks up well against rivals like the Honda CR-V, Ford Kuga, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5.

What makes it stand out especially is its bold design, generous tech features, and strong value proposition, which, in our view, gives you a well-rounded package that ticks a lot of boxes for the average driver.

  • Alfa Romeo Junior
  • Ford Kuga
  • Honda CR-V
  • Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Kia Sportage Hybrid

  • Mazda CX-5

Reliability and Warranty

Here, Hyundai has built a solid reputation for reliability with its prior generations, and the Tucson continues that trend.

For example, it is built to last, with many owners reporting years of trouble-free driving, all while its warranty offering is one of the best in the market as well in this class - with a 5-year / unlimited mileage cover in the UK.

All in all, that peace of mind really adds to its appeal, especially if you are planning to keep the car for a good few years.

This reliability is also one of the reasons it has won so many industry awards.

For example, just some of the awards it has won include:

  • Mid-Size SUV of the Year Award at the Auto Express New Car Awards
  • Best Mid-Size SUV Award at the Auto Express New Car Awards

Maintenance and Ownership Costs

Running a Tucson day-to-day also really won’t break the bank.

For instance, unlike other brands, here, you will tend to find that scheduled servicing is fairly priced, and you can also get service plans that help spread the cost.

Common repairs can be rare, but even if something does go wrong, parts aren’t too expensive and are reasonably priced.

Your insurance costs are in the middle of the road, making them manageable for most budgets. Overall, it’s a sensible car for families to own in the long term as well.

Our approach is to introduce you first to Hyundai Finance, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to be make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and Hyundai Finance also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required.
